Tooth Extractions
Tooth extraction is often the best option for treating toothaches in your pet. Dogs and cats are masters at hiding toothaches. Even if your pet seems to be eating normally, that unfortunately doesn’t mean it’s pain-free. If the enamel is damaged or the gums are severely inflamed, this can cause intense pain—eating is simply driven by the instinct for survival.
When is tooth extraction necessary? In cases of minor damage and in many instances of fractured tooth crowns, we can save the teeth with fillings or root canal treatments (endodontics, vital pulp therapy). Even in cases of advanced periodontal disease (periodontitis), there are surgical procedures that can save the tooth. In cases of advanced inflammation or loose teeth, surgical removal is the safest choice for your pet’s well-being. An inflamed tooth puts strain on the entire body via the bloodstream. Extraction permanently relieves the pain and protects your pet’s health.
Here’s how the surgical procedure works: At our practice in Berlin-Neukölln, which specializes in dental care, we perform the procedure under gentle, monitored inhalation anesthesia. To ensure your pet feels absolutely nothing, the affected teeth are also treated with a local anesthetic. First, we take digital X-rays to accurately assess the roots, which lie deep within the jaw. During surgical extraction, a small incision is made, and the gum tissue is carefully detached from the jawbone to gain free access to the root. Since the molars of dogs and cats usually have several deeply anchored roots, the tooth is first divided into individual segments using a drill. Often, the roots must be partially exposed using a fine drill to enable an extraction that minimizes damage to the jawbone. After thoroughly cleaning the wound cavity, we suture the gums without tension using self-dissolving sutures.
What can you expect after the treatment?
Pain medication will help with healing during the first few days. For about two weeks, feed your pet only soft food and avoid hard toys or tugging games. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your pet will bounce back once the constant pain is gone.
